What is a Wellness Policy?

Wellness policies are important tools for parents, LEA's, and school districts to promote student wellness, prevent and reduce childhood obesity, and provide assurance that school meal nutrition guidelines meet the Federal standards. Local school based activities that promote student wellness, as well as nutrition guidelines to promote student health and reduce childhood obesity for all foods available on each school campus.

Who are the potential stakeholders and how do I participate in the development, review, update, and implementation of the Local School Wellness Policy?

Stakeholders include teachers of physical education, school health professionals, parents, students, food and nutrition, school board members, school administrators, and the public with periodic reviews occurring. Reviews generally occur every August with periodic assessments ensuring compliance and review of goals. Every July, all employees of the school system receive the Wellness Policy during County-Wide In Service. Information is discussed and goals are emphasized. The Community Health Council members meet every second Wednesday of each month and the policy is discussed with members of the community and healthcare field. The wellness policy is distributed at all PTO meetings and Family Night meetings at each school.
